Andrii Skorbatiuk is undergoing rehabilitation at the Modrychi Center following a severe blast injury. At the start of his recovery, he was unable to move or speak independently, relying on a tracheostomy and gastrostomy for breathing and nutrition.
Thanks to the comprehensive work of the multidisciplinary team, Andrii began speaking, breathing on his own, and gradually restoring movement. Both the tracheostomy and gastrostomy tubes have been removed, and he is currently continuing his rehabilitation, relearning how to walk.
Initial Patient Status
Following the injury, Andrii was in critical condition and required round-the-clock care. He struggled with basic daily actions, independent breathing, eating, and interacting with those around him.
The primary challenges at the beginning of rehabilitation included:
-
Absence of independent movement;
-
Inability to speak;
-
Tracheostomy dependency;
-
Gastrostomy dependency;
-
Need for continuous medical support;
-
Need for gradual verticalization;
-
Restoration of basic body functions.
The recovery process
Andrii’s rehabilitation program was developed step by step, taking into account his condition, endurance, and response to physical exertion. The multidisciplinary team focused on safely restoring basic functions while making every moment count toward his recovery.
Key Areas of Focus
During the rehabilitation process, the specialists focused on several key areas:
- Restoring independent breathing;
- Gradually regaining speech;
- Verticalization and posture training;
- Developing motor activity;
- Preparing for walking and gait training;
- Preventing complications;
- Maintaining overall physical condition.
The role of the specialist team
In complex cases, it is crucial for the patient to receive comprehensive, integrated care rather than isolated treatments. Andrii was supported by a dedicated team that continuously evaluated his condition, adjusted exertion levels, and guided him step by step through each stage of recovery.
